Example of using the ISMR scheme to describe the modeling process using “snapshots”:
During the progression of a modeling process, different visualizations and at times different underlying theoretical notions may be assigned similar or differing roles. These ongoing changes contribute to the complexity of the statistical modeling process. It is however, due to this complexity that we believe our scheme to be useful, as it allows us to translate a convoluted process into a sequence of separate snapshots while tracking three central entities: Conjecture, Data and Comparison models. Each snapshot describes the current version of all three models. Recognizing a difference in any one (or more) elicits the construction of a new snapshot. The result is then a discrete set of snapshots, moments in time, each containing a multitude of, however organized, information. Looking at the series of snapshots enables the construction of a more coherent and complete understanding of the complex statistical modeling process, eventually uniting insights regarding each of the three.
Utilizing recent findings from the 2016 iteration of the Connections project, we provide here a brief summary of a series of snapshots obtained by using our ISMT scheme. Each row in the following table details the Data, Comparison and Conjecture Models of one snapshot. Each snapshot is numbered according to their chronological order of appearance (S 1 – S 5). For each snapshot, a brief descriptions of its resulting actions and belief is also included.
